Description

Join the Bioprocess Science and Engineering group at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Chemical Engineering for a fully funded PhD scholarship focused on developing protein-based methods for rare earth element (REE) recovery from bio-mining streams and e-waste. This interdisciplinary project is part of a joint UQ-DTU scholarship, supporting close collaboration between DTU and the University of Queensland, Australia. The research is embedded in the PROSYS research center and leverages DTU's world-class facilities and international networks. The PhD project will involve the expression, characterization, and application of proteins suitable for REE recovery, techno-economic evaluation of process options, testing protein immobilization, reactor operation with real solutions, and modelling for scale-up. You will combine protein and process engineering, participate in workshops and exchanges with the UQ team, collaborate within the BSE research group, and report your findings in peer-reviewed publications and conferences. Additional responsibilities include public engagement, social media dissemination, and teaching/supervising MSc and BSc students. Applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent in biotechnology, (bio)chemical engineering, or a related field. Strong English proficiency, analytical skills, and the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary team are essential. Interest in reactor design, scale-up, and pilot operation of bioprocesses is preferred but not mandatory. The scholarship is subject to academic approval, and the successful candidate will be enrolled in a general PhD programme at DTU.
