PhD Opportunity: Missionisation of Re-entry and Recovery Architectures for Upper Stages (DC16)

Indra Deimos, a leading European technology group based in Spain, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position as part of the Horizon Europe MSCA SLICE Doctoral Network. The project focuses on developing sustainable, reusable upper stages for space launchers, with a strong emphasis on minimising environmental impacts and integrating ecodesign principles into mission engineering. The research aims to bridge the gap between space engineering and climate science, contributing to the European Green Deal and future EU Space Law regulations.

Research Focus: The doctoral candidate will define and validate low-fidelity models for emissions estimation during atmospheric re-entry, develop mission engineering solutions to minimise emissions, and create a missionisation strategy and tool for re-entry and recovery architectures. The project includes secondments at Politecnico di Torino (Italy) and ONERA (France), offering international research experience and collaboration within a diverse consortium.

Host Institution: Indra Deimos is renowned for its expertise in space engineering, mission and system design, and has extensive experience with major space agencies such as ESA and NASA. The successful candidate will join an international team of over 30 researchers and benefit from a structured training programme, participation in international conferences, and outreach activities.

Funding: The position is fully funded for 36 months under the MSCA framework, offering a competitive salary, living and mobility allowances, and, if eligible, a family allowance. Employment includes social security and health insurance contributions as per Spanish regulations.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold (or be close to completing) a Master’s degree in aerospace engineering or a related field, with strong skills in simulation, modelling, and programming (Python, MATLAB, C/C++/Fortran). Proficiency in English and eligibility for PhD enrolment at Politecnico di Torino are required. The MSCA mobility rule applies: candidates must not have resided in Spain for more than 12 months in the past 36 months prior to recruitment. Additional desired skills include ecodesign, climate science, and project management.

Essential skills include solid knowledge of computer science and informatics (simulation, optimisation, and modelling tools), product and processes engineering (space engineering, launch vehicle design, system design, design for demise, ecodesign), and knowledge of re-entry and recovery system concepts for reusable stages. Strong foundation in mission analysis, trajectory/re-entry mechanics, and launch system design is required. Proficiency in numerical modelling and programming (Python, MATLAB, C/C++/Fortran) is necessary. Applicants must be able to work efficiently in diverse, interdisciplinary, and multicultural environments, both independently and in teams, and possess excellent communication skills in English. Applicants must be eligible to enroll in a PhD program at Politecnico di Torino (POLITO). Mobility and eligibility rules for Horizon Europe MSCA apply. Desired skills include knowledge in ecodesign, climate sciences, life-cycle assessments, project management, and familiarity with multi-disciplinary optimisation and trade-off analyses.
