About this position

The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Institute Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL/LSCE-CEREA) invite applications for a fully funded PhD position as part of the SLICE (Space Launch Impact on Climate and Environment) project. The successful candidate will join a vibrant international research group at IPSL, working closely with experts in climate and environmental sciences. The project involves developing a new version of the LMDZ-INCA global model to include emissions from rocket launches, studying their impact on ozone chemistry, and incorporating the aluminium cycle and various emission inventories. The research will also involve secondments at the University of Leeds (UK) and the Finnish Meteorological Institute, fostering collaboration and skill development in alumina chemistry, microphysics, and sub-grid plume processing.

Applicants must hold or be about to obtain a Master’s degree in atmospheric science, physics, or a related field, and demonstrate strong knowledge in atmospheric modeling, chemistry-climate coupling, and applied physics. Excellent communication skills in English are required, and candidates must be eligible for PhD enrollment at Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ). The position is open to all nationalities, but applicants must comply with the Horizon Europe MSCA Mobility Rule and must not have resided in France for more than 12 months in the past 36 months prior to recruitment. Knowledge of French is advantageous but not mandatory.

The position is funded through the Horizon Europe MSCA program, offering a competitive salary with living and mobility allowances, and, if eligible, a family allowance. The employment contract is for 36 months, with additional benefits including participation in international conferences, structured training, and outreach activities. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work efficiently and independently in a diverse, interdisciplinary, and multicultural environment, possess strong problem-solving skills, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Applicants must be eligible to enroll in a PhD program at Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ). Mobility Rule: Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in France for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment. Candidates must not have been awarded a doctoral degree at the date of recruitment. Knowledge of French is a plus but not required. All nationalities are eligible.
