Umeå University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in architecture, focusing on feminist, queer, and spatial justice approaches. This interdisciplinary project is a collaboration between the Umeå School of Architecture (UMA), UmArts, and the Gender Research School at Umeå Centre for Gender Studies (UCGS). The successful candidate will join UMA’s research group Infrastructures of Care, engaging with relational, experiential, and justice-oriented architectural research.

The doctoral project investigates how choreographic and embodied practices can empower, resist, and redefine spatial norms, challenging standardized models and historical exclusions in architecture. Drawing on feminist, queer, and crip theories, the research explores gendered, sexualized, and ableist dimensions of space and urban form, using site-specific performance and archival work to reimagine architectural and urban imaginaries of justice and inclusion.

UMA offers an international, design-oriented academic environment integrating architectural practice and critical research. The department consists of approximately 40 staff members, including four doctoral students, and fosters experimental, research-informed approaches to architecture with an emphasis on ecological, social, and spatial justice. The Arts Campus at Umeå University provides a vibrant setting for interdisciplinary collaboration across design, fine arts, and scientific disciplines.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in architecture or equivalent, with substantial credits in relevant specializations. Strong research interest, creativity, independence, teamwork skills, and proficiency in English are required. Experience with archival research, performance-based approaches, and prior knowledge of gender studies and architectural theory are advantageous. The position is salaried according to university standards, with a four-year full-time contract (extendable to five years with teaching duties). The successful candidate will be based in Umeå and expected to participate actively in departmental and research group activities.
