About this position

Linköping University invites applications for a PhD student position in automatic control at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY). The research project focuses on data-driven control in high-dimensional systems, addressing computational challenges and theoretical gaps in learning-based feedback for complex engineering and medical applications. Recent advances in machine learning have enabled new application areas such as autonomous vehicle control using video data, simulation-based prediction of turbulent flows, and precision medicine based on gene sequencing time series. However, the lack of a solid theoretical foundation for learning-based feedback in high dimensions leads to unpredictable behavior, posing a bottleneck for efficient and resilient control.

The successful candidate will conduct research to bridge this gap, collaborating with Professor Anders Rantzer at Lund University and participating in the ELLIIT research environment. The Division of Automatic Control at Linköping University offers a vibrant, internationally oriented research environment with a strong balance between theory and real-world applications. Research areas include autonomous systems, data-driven modeling, learning-based control, optimization, complex networks, and sensor fusion. The division maintains extensive collaborations with industrial partners and leading research groups worldwide, providing excellent opportunities for international exposure and impactful research.

As a PhD student, you will devote most of your time to doctoral studies and research projects, with the possibility of teaching or other departmental duties up to 20% of full-time. The position is full-time for four years, with possible extension up to five years based on teaching and institutional assignments. Employment is initially for one year, with renewals based on progress. Salary is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression, and employment benefits are provided.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics (minimum 240 credits, with at least 60 in advanced courses), or equivalent knowledge. Strong mathematical maturity, excellent programming skills, and proficiency in English (oral and written) are required. Candidates should be able to work independently, be goal-oriented, possess strong problem-solving skills, communicate clearly, and collaborate effectively with others. The degree requirement must be met by the time the employment contract is signed.

Applications must be submitted online by April 30, 2026. For more information about the division, visit https://liu.se/organisation/liu/isy/rt. For questions about working as a PhD student at ISY, contact the department via the provided email address. Linköping University values diversity and equal opportunities in its workplace.

Apply for the position by clicking the 'Apply' button on the job page. Late applications will not be considered.
