About this position
DESY, one of the world's leading research centres, is seeking a PhD student in Molecular and Structural Microbiology with a focus on Microbiome Science for its Hamburg location. The position is based at the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB), an international and interdisciplinary research hub where scientists collaborate to investigate the structure, dynamics, and function of pathogens and their interactions with hosts. The successful candidate will join the Sondermann lab, which specializes in deciphering molecular processes that govern bacterial interactions within microbial communities.
This PhD project centers on the study of bacterial secretion systems, specifically the type VI secretion system of Bacteroidota present in the mammalian intestine. The research is part of a Germany-wide network dedicated to illuminating gene functions of the human intestinal microbiota, offering extensive opportunities for collaboration both locally and nationally. The role involves conducting research, presenting and publishing results, actively participating in the research group, and collaborating closely with project partners such as Prof. Unterweger at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Participation in consortium activities is also expected.
Applicants should be passionate about microbiology and eager to develop professionally. A Master’s degree in biosciences (or near completion) is required, along with experience in molecular microbiology, structural biology, or protein biochemistry. Strong teamwork skills and excellent English communication and writing abilities are essential. The position offers a unique working environment on an international research campus, with a focus on respectful cooperation, gender equality, and work-life balance. Benefits include flexible working hours, family-friendly policies, health management, occupational pension provision, and a secure workplace as a publicly funded employer. Scientific training at one of Europe’s leading research infrastructures, membership in the Graduate School Life of Kiel University, and participation in a national microbiome science network are additional advantages.
The position is limited to three years, with the possibility of extension. PhD students receive a monthly salary of 65% of the remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government), in accordance with TV-AVH regulations, plus a financial supplement for a German job ticket. DESY in Hamburg does not grant doctoral degrees directly; candidates will be enrolled at the University of Kiel and must meet its doctoral admission requirements. Applications from women and severely disabled persons are strongly encouraged. The application deadline is January 15, 2026.
To apply, submit a letter of motivation, CV, relevant certificates, and two letters of reference via the DESY application portal. For further information, contact Prof. Holger Sondermann at [email protected]. Additional details are available on the DESY career page.
