About this position

The Institute of Philosophy at KU Leuven is seeking three part-time postdoctoral assistants to join its vibrant academic community. These teaching fellow positions, with the status of postdoctoral assistant, are designed for scholars with a strong background in philosophy and a passion for both teaching and research. KU Leuven's Institute of Philosophy offers a comprehensive range of bachelor, master, and advanced master programs in both Dutch and English, and is home to over 100 PhD students from around the globe. The Faculty boasts an extensive national and international network and provides access to an excellent library, fostering a rich environment for academic growth.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach philosophy courses at all levels, primarily in Dutch. The teaching assignment, which ranges from 4 to 6 course units depending on appointment percentage, covers areas such as metaphysics, philosophy of culture, logic, philosophy of science, phenomenology, and continental philosophy. Introductory courses in philosophy to large groups are also part of the teaching duties. In addition to courses in Leuven, some teaching will take place at the KU Leuven campus in Kortrijk. Candidates will provide didactic and scientific support to students, including supervision of MA theses.

Research is an integral component of the role. Postdoctoral assistants will participate in activities of the research center most aligned with their profile and are expected to produce high-quality publications in their field. The Institute values collaboration, diversity, and open dialogue, and strives for an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment.

Applicants must hold a PhD in philosophy and demonstrate the ability to conduct high-level research. Knowledge of higher education in Flanders and proven teaching experience in philosophy are essential. Excellent communication skills, responsibility, and teamwork are required. Proficiency in both Dutch and English at C1 level is mandatory, as teaching will be conducted mainly in Dutch. Only candidates meeting these language requirements will be considered.

The offer includes three part-time positions for one year, with an appointment percentage between 40% and 60%, in salary scale 44. The starting date is September 15, 2026. KU Leuven is committed to equal opportunity and does not tolerate discrimination of any kind. For questions about accessibility or support, assistance is available via the provided email address.

To apply, submit your application through the KU Leuven jobsite. For further information, contact Prof. dr. Helder De Schutter, Dean of the Institute of Philosophy, at [email protected]. The application deadline is April 15, 2026.
