About this position

LUT University invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position in the chromatographic separation of biobased molecules, based at the Lahti campus in Finland. This role is part of a dynamic and growing separation science community, focusing on both fundamental and applied research to advance sustainable separation technologies. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of new ideas and future directions in the field, with opportunities to engage in an upcoming AI-enabled research initiative.

The research will center on chromatographic separation of biobased molecules, utilizing modelling, simulation, experimental chromatography, or a combination of these approaches, tailored to the candidate’s expertise. Responsibilities include designing and analyzing separation processes, developing data-driven or AI-assisted tools, and generating high-quality experimental data to support method development, modelling, and machine learning. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with an active research team, participate in collaborative projects, publish research findings, and help guide future research directions. Additional duties include supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses, supporting doctoral researchers, and participating in teaching activities during the academic year.

The position requires a doctoral degree (PhD or DSc) in chemical engineering, bioprocess technology, food processing technology, or a closely related field. Candidates should have a strong understanding of separation processes beyond the analytical scale and a keen interest in advancing these through modelling, simulation, or experimental chromatography. Experience with advanced chromatographic separation processes (such as SMB chromatography and recycling schemes) and process development is preferred. Skills in coding, data-driven approaches, or AI are advantageous, and an interest in exploring AI applications in separation science is highly valued. Proficiency in English is essential, while Finnish language skills are not required.

LUT University offers a collaborative, international research environment with access to advanced laboratory and modelling infrastructure. The position is full-time, fixed-term for two years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. The starting salary is approximately EUR 4,200–4,900 per month, based on the Finnish university salary system (requirement levels 5–6), and includes benefits and flexible working hours. The role requires on-site presence for laboratory work and meetings, with some travel between campuses and to international conferences. The work starts as soon as possible, with the start date negotiable. A six-month trial period applies.

To apply, submit your application via the online form by 14 December 2025, including a cover letter (max. 1 page), CV (max. 5 pages), doctoral degree certificate (with certified English translation if needed), and a complete list of publications. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. For further information, contact Professor Tuomo Sainio at [email protected] or by phone during the specified times. For technical support, email [email protected].
