About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in artificial intelligence with applications in the life sciences. The successful candidate will join the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Sweden's largest mathematical department, renowned for its creative and innovative research environment. The department is a joint collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, offering a dynamic academic setting in Gothenburg.

The research project centers on developing multimodal transformer-based deep learning methods to extract insights from genomic and chemical data. Applications span infectious diseases and environmental toxicology, with interdisciplinary collaboration between the research group of Prof Erik Kristiansson at Mathematical Sciences and the group of Mikael Gustavsson at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Gothenburg. The position is also affiliated with the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research and the Centre for Future Chemical Risk Assessment and Management Strategies.

As a postdoc, you will conduct independent research, develop scientific concepts, write manuscripts, and present results at international conferences. The role may include voluntary teaching activities (up to 20%), such as supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s students. The position is initially for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension, and requires physical presence in Gothenburg throughout employment. Chalmers offers a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, parental leave, subsidized day care, and free schools. Swedish language courses are available for non-native speakers.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, chemistry, or a related field, completed by the time of employment decision. Strong written and verbal English skills, prior experience with artificial intelligence in the life sciences (preferably microbial genomics), and programming proficiency in Python or similar languages are required. Experience with transformer models applied to DNA and/or chemical structures is highly valued. Interest in collaborative, interdisciplinary research and teamwork is essential. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

To apply, submit your application via the online form, including a comprehensive CV, publication list, teaching experience, and a personal letter (max 2 pages) as PDF files. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. The application deadline is April 29, 2026. Contact details for references will be requested after the interview. For questions, contact Prof Erik Kristiansson or Dr Irina Pettersson.

Chalmers University of Technology is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and actively works to improve gender balance through initiatives such as the GENIE project. The university fosters an innovative spirit and close collaboration with society, aiming for scientific excellence and sustainable development.
