The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), a member of the Helmholtz Association, is offering a postdoctoral position in biology, marine biology, and fisheries biology. The research focus is on Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), a key species in the Southern Ocean ecosystem and the target of a major fishery regulated by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). The project aims to contribute to sustainable fishery management through ecosystem-based approaches, analyzing data on predator populations, ecosystem state, and krill abundance and distribution.

The position is based in Bremerhaven, Germany, and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity. The successful candidate will join the Section Polar Biological Oceanography at AWI and work on research tasks defined by CCAMLR working groups, with a focus on ecosystem monitoring and management. Key responsibilities include analyzing krill fishing operation data, assessing the impact of fisheries on krill populations, and using empirical and simulation models to explore environmental changes, predator dynamics, and fishing pressures. Hydroacoustic data analysis is also part of the role.

Applicants must have a PhD in biology, marine biology, fishery management and conservation, or related fields. Essential skills include strong quantitative abilities (statistics, modelling), experience with large datasets (preferably using R or Python), and excellent communication and teamwork skills. Proficiency in English (CEFR Level C1) is required. Experience in Antarctic research and science communication is advantageous.

The position is full-time (with part-time options), limited to January 31, 2028, and paid according to the TVöD Bund salary scale (up to level 13).
