About this position

This postdoctoral position at Eindhoven University of Technology is part of the DREAm project, which aims to enhance the indoor environment of bedrooms to support sleep quality for persons living with dementia and their caregivers. With the number of people affected by dementia rising, sleep disturbances are a major concern, impacting both patients and informal caregivers. The project focuses on non-pharmacological interventions, specifically optimizing indoor environmental factors such as air quality, thermal comfort, lighting, and acoustics, to improve sleep and reduce caregiver burden.

The successful candidate will join the Building Performance and Building Lighting research groups, working under the supervision of Dr.ir. Marcel Loomans and Dr.ir. Mariëlle Aarts. The research will involve literature review, in-situ experimentation, and ecological validation studies to assess the impact of environmental interventions on sleep quality. Collaboration within a multidisciplinary consortium, including medical universities and industrial partners, is central to the project, providing a rich environment for exchanging knowledge and developing innovative solutions.

The position offers access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, advanced measurement equipment, and a supportive academic network. The university provides a dynamic and ambitious setting, with a strong focus on sustainability and interdisciplinary research in the built environment. The appointment is for 18 months full-time, with a competitive salary (scale 10), bonuses, allowances, and support for international candidates, including relocation and tax benefits.

Applicants should have a PhD in environmental psychology, building engineering, or related fields, with experience or interest in sleep quality, dementia, and indoor environmental assessment. Strong communication skills, independence, and the ability to work in an international team are essential. English proficiency at C1 level is required, preferably supported by IELTS/TOEFL scores. Previous research experience and publications in relevant areas are advantageous.

To apply, candidates must submit a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact details for three references via the online application portal. The position will remain open until filled, with a final application deadline of December 12, 2025. For further information, contact the hiring manager Marcel Loomans at [email protected] or visit the university's career page.
