About this position

The Brubotics research group at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to lead the RESSORT project, a major EU-funded initiative focused on advancing soft robotic technologies. Brubotics, the Brussels Human Robotics Research Center, is a leading European hub for safe human-robot interaction, with a team of approximately 60 researchers working on both fundamental and applied robotics research. The group has a strong track record in launching robotics spinoffs and collaborating with industry, and is committed to contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through human-robot collaboration.

The RESSORT project (Resilient, Efficient, Soft, and Sustainable Optimized Robotics Technology) aims to elevate novel soft robotics technologies to higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), accelerating their transition toward real-world deployment and market adoption. Key innovations include self-healing polymers, advanced 3D Hall-effect force sensors, and self-closing suction grippers for energy-efficient, versatile vacuum-based automation. These technologies have been developed and validated at Brubotics over the past five years and are now ready for integration into practical applications.

The successful candidate will play a central role in maturing these innovations by integrating, validating, benchmarking, and optimizing their performance within three flagship use cases: a soft exosuit for posture support, soft manipulators equipped with suction-cup grippers, and a morphing inspection drone designed for confined or fragile environments. The position also involves addressing application-driven requirements such as performance, manufacturability, scalability, and other real-world constraints essential for successful deployment.

As a leading postdoc in this large EU project, you will supervise two PhD researchers at Brubotics (VUB), supported by a business developer and guided by Professors Bram Vanderborght and Seppe Terryn. You will co-coordinate the European consortium, which includes 14 leading partners from top universities, research institutes, and innovative companies. The role involves ensuring that 17 researchers across Europe remain aligned with the project’s objectives, milestones, and timeline, and offers a uniquely rich and diverse research ecosystem with collaboration across disciplines and sectors.

The position offers a contract as postdoctoral researcher for one year, renewable for up to three additional years based on positive evaluation. The monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scales for postdoctoral researchers on the Contract Research Staff. Additional benefits include ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree in (soft) robotics or an equivalent field, with an excellent academic record and high-impact, internationally peer-reviewed research activities. Experience in project management, preferably on international or large national projects, is expected. Advanced programming skills in C/C++ are required; proficiency in Python and/or MATLAB is advantageous. Strong background in modeling and control, with experience in AI tools considered a plus. Expertise in mechatronics and integration of technologies within robotic systems is essential. Experience supervising PhD students and/or undergraduate researchers is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills and high proficiency in spoken and written English. Passion for interdisciplinary research and technology translation to market is important; industrial experience is a significant advantage.

To apply, send your application including diplomas, motivation letter, academic CV, a one-page summary of your PhD thesis (in English), and optionally proof of English proficiency to [email protected] and [email protected]. The selection committee will review applications and inform you of next steps. The application deadline is 25 April 2026.
