Description

This postdoctoral fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites applications from highly motivated researchers to join an Israel Science Foundation (ISF)-funded project focused on the study of medieval cities in Mongolia. The project is interdisciplinary, combining historical analysis with field expeditions and digital humanities approaches. Successful candidates will specialize in history, particularly Inner Asian and Chinese history, and will analyze historical records to extract data on cities, nomadic tribes, agriculture, diplomacy, defense, taxation, trade policies, and climatic anomalies. The fellowship offers opportunities for independent research, participation in fieldwork, attendance at project seminars, and contributions to academic publications. Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent, with comprehensive knowledge of Inner Asian and Chinese history, and experience working with Classical Chinese sources from the Tang, Liao, Song, or Yuan periods. Additional language skills (Mongolian, Russian, Classical Uighur), specialization in the late Tang (Uighur) period, and proficiency in Digital Humanities tools are considered advantages. The position is based at the Edmond J. Safra Campus in Jerusalem and offers a monthly stipend of $2550. Application materials include a letter of motivation, CV with publications, academic degree(s), and a writing sample, with two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the supervisors. The application deadline is January 17, 2026, and the fellowship is set to begin on February 1, 2026. This is an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researchers interested in medieval Asian history, interdisciplinary research, and international collaboration.
