The Rangamani group at the University of California San Diego is recruiting a postdoctoral scholar in membrane biophysics, focusing on biophysical modeling of cellular membranes. The research will involve developing theoretical models and computational simulations to study the mechanics of the lipid bilayer, lipid-protein interactions, the glycocalyx, and the actin cortex. Key biophysical processes include the formation of extracellular vesicles and endocytosis, with reference to the group’s recent publications.

Successful candidates should have a strong background in mathematical modeling, membrane biophysics, and membrane-protein interactions. Essential skills include proficiency in differential geometry, high performance computing, finite-element methods, and molecular dynamics simulations. The role requires motivation to learn new skills and technologies, as well as excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

Responsibilities include developing mathematical models from first principles, conducting scientific computing simulations, supervising and training graduate and undergraduate researchers, preparing manuscripts and fellowship applications, and presenting research at meetings. The postdoctoral scholar is also expected to pursue independent projects and apply for fellowships with the group’s support.

Applicants must hold a PhD in computational biophysics, membrane biophysics, physics, or a related field. The position is governed by the UAW contract and adheres to UCSD Principles of Community. Funding is provided according to university standards for postdoctoral scholars. The position is available immediately with flexible starting dates.
