About this position

The Wessel Cognitive Neurology Laboratory at the University of Iowa, led by Professor Jan Wessel, is seeking 2-3 postdoctoral scholars to join their team in the field of human cognitive neuroscience. The research focuses on cognitive control in humans, with broad applications to movement, language, memory, and attention. The lab employs a variety of advanced neuroscience techniques, including EEG, TMS, DBS, sEEG, fMRI, EMG, brain lesion studies, and computational modeling. Candidates with experience in any of these methods are encouraged to apply.

The lab is part of both the Departments of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Neurology, and is equipped with state-of-the-art EEG and TMS systems, as well as access to 3T and 7T fMRI scanners. Collaborations exist with the Neurosurgical Department (for intracranial LFP and sEEG recordings), the Neuropsychology Group (Iowa Lesion Patient registry), and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The lab is also a member of the Cognitive Control Collaborative, which includes five laboratories and hosts regular meetings and external speakers.

The position is fully funded for one year with a salary of $62,232, with the possibility of extension. Most postdoctoral scholars can be sponsored as J-1 exchange scholars, but H-1B sponsorship is not covered. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, biomedical engineering, or a related field, a strong publication record in human cognitive control, programming skills (preferably MATLAB or Python), and experience with relevant neuroscience techniques. The ability to work independently and collaboratively is essential.

To apply, submit a CV, letters of interest, and contact information for two references via the University of Iowa job portal. The application deadline is March 28, 2026. For more information about the lab and Iowa City, visit the provided links.
