The Department of Language and Culture at UiT The Arctic University of Norway invites applications for a three-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the neurocognition of multilingualism, affiliated with the Center for Language, Brain & Learning (C-LaBL), specifically within the Brain domain. This center, funded by the Trond Mohn Foundation (2024-2029), is internationally recognized for its research in linguistics, cognitive science, and neuroscience, and offers a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment for advancing research on how multiple languages interact in the mind and brain.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of linguists and cognitive scientists in Tromsø, working on innovative projects that investigate the effects of relative language distance (RLD) on neurocognitive outcomes. Research at C-LaBL employs a range of methodologies, including behavioral experiments, eye-tracking, EEG, and MRI, to explore how bi-/multilinguals learn new languages, control their language systems, and adapt cognitively and neurologically to diverse linguistic experiences. The center’s work is theoretically motivated and addresses practical challenges in education and health, with a strong emphasis on collaborative research and mentorship for early-career scholars.

The Department of Language and Culture is home to one of the world’s leading research communities in linguistics, with active groups in language acquisition, cognitive linguistics, Sami language technology, sociolinguistics, and multilingualism. The department offers a broad portfolio of teaching and research programs, including linguistics, literature, art history, media studies, and several language programs at bachelor, master, and PhD levels. The advertised postdoctoral position is one of nine PhD/postdoctoral roles within C-LaBL, providing opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and professional development.

Applicants must hold a PhD in cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience, psychology, language sciences, or a closely related field. Those in the final stages of their PhD may apply if they provide relevant documentation and a statement from their supervisor regarding expected completion. Required qualifications include experience with experimental design, data collection, and analysis, as well as excellent spoken and written English. Desired skills include proficiency with imaging methods (EEG, (f)MRI), advanced statistical modelling, prior research with bi-/multilingual populations, and competence in Norwegian. Motivation, research potential, and personal suitability are key selection criteria.
