About this position
The University of Turku's Faculty of Technology, Department of Computing, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in the field of medical artificial intelligence (AI). This three-year, fully funded position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a highly interdisciplinary and internationally connected research environment, affiliated with the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) Institute Finland. The successful candidate will join the research group led by ELLIS Principal Investigator, Associate Professor Kimmo Kartasalo, and contribute to the development and implementation of precision medicine approaches and medical AI for improving diagnostics and treatment of cancer and other diseases with significant societal impact.
The postdoctoral researcher will lead the design, development, and implementation of novel computational approaches for robust, explainable, and fair medical AI. The role offers considerable freedom to pursue independent research interests, as well as opportunities for close collaboration with group members and national and international academic and industry partners. Responsibilities include presenting research results in scientific publications and conferences, supervising students, contributing to recruitment and research funding, and engaging in training opportunities such as university pedagogy, leadership, and grant writing.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, computer science, image/signal processing, machine learning, statistics, or a related field. Demonstrated expertise in machine learning or AI, especially in healthcare applications and cancer research, is highly valued. Experience with medical images, omics data, or health data, strong programming and software development skills, and familiarity with relevant ML/AI frameworks are required. International experience, collaborative research, and interest in supervision and teaching are considered merits. Excellent communication skills in English are essential. In exceptional cases, candidates who have nearly completed their doctoral studies may be considered for a project researcher role.
The position offers a competitive salary (3600–4500 euros/month for postdoctoral researchers; 3100–3300 euros/month for project researchers), a six-month trial period, and a supportive, collegial working environment. The University of Turku provides excellent support for international hires, flexible working hours, and well-being services. The ELLIS network offers outstanding opportunities for collaboration and career development in AI for health.
Applications must be submitted via the University of Turku's online recruitment system by 31 March 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, CV, list of publications, degree certificates (with English or Finnish translation), and any other relevant materials. For further information, contact Associate Professor Kimmo Kartasalo ([email protected]). For application process queries, contact HR Specialist Nina Reini ([email protected]).
