About this position

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, is seeking a part-time (80%) postdoctoral scholarship holder to join the Comparative Perinatal Development group within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences. This international, multidisciplinary group is dedicated to advancing animal-centred research, with a particular focus on bridging the gap between animal and human health through the innovative research line “From Pigs to Paediatrics.”

Under the coordination of Professor Chris Van Ginneken, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in research on perinatal gut development in pigs, with a special emphasis on intestinal barrier function in suckling pigs and the study of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). The position involves a combination of field trials and in vitro studies, contributing to both ongoing and new research projects. The postdoctoral scholar will also be expected to help secure research funding through grant applications and external collaborations, mentor PhD and master’s students, and participate in a limited number of teaching activities related to Laboratory Animal Sciences.

The University of Antwerp offers a dynamic and stimulating environment at Campus Drie Eiken, with opportunities for professional growth, networking, and interdisciplinary learning. The position is funded as a part-time (80%) postdoctoral scholarship for two years, starting on 1 January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Additional benefits include Eco cheques, an Internet connectivity allowance, a bicycle allowance, or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Life Sciences, preferably in Veterinary Medicine or Bioscience Engineering, or obtain it by the start date. Candidates should demonstrate strong research and teaching competencies, fluency in English and the ability to express themselves in Dutch, and possess qualifications for working with laboratory animals (Category C, or Function A and B) as well as a driver’s license B.

To apply, candidates should submit their application via the University of Antwerp’s online platform by 15 January 2026, including a cover letter, CV, diplomas, and contact information for two references. For further information, contact Professor Chris Van Ginneken at [email protected].
