The Trinational Doctoral Programme in Italian Studies is a unique joint PhD opportunity offered through the collaboration of the University of Bonn (Germany), University of Florence (Italy), and Sorbonne University (France). This programme is designed for students with a strong academic background in Italian Studies, providing an international and interdisciplinary environment for research in Italian literature and related fields. Students will prepare a doctoral thesis on a subject concerning Italian literature within three years, participating in lectures and intensive courses organized specifically for programme participants. The course structure includes annual intensive weeks held alternately in Bonn, Florence, or Paris, and a colloquium in Bonn conducted in German and/or Italian. During the stay abroad, the programme is held in Italian, and participants may write their dissertation in either language. The universities restrict the number of students admitted each year, ensuring a focused and supportive academic environment.

International elements are central to the programme, including guest lecturers, specialist literature in multiple languages, and collaborative projects with foreign partners. The programme is self-paced, allowing students to progress according to their individual research needs. While there are no tuition fees, students must pay a semester contribution of about 330 EUR, which covers a transit pass and accident insurance. Living costs in Bonn are estimated at 800–1,000 EUR per month, with accommodation options available through the Studierendenwerk Bonn.

Funding opportunities are available within the university, with one excellent graduate student supported by a three-year scholarship. Academic admission requirements include a Master of Arts in Italian Studies (or similar) with excellent grades, particularly for the Master's thesis, and Italian language proficiency at C2 CEFR level.
