About this position

ETH Zürich is offering two fully funded PhD positions in atmospheric selenium research, focusing on both field and laboratory analyses as well as process-based modeling. The successful candidates will join the Inorganic Environmental Geochemistry group at ETH Zurich and Eawag, working within an interdisciplinary team dedicated to understanding the biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and their impact on human health.

The project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), aims to advance knowledge of selenium (Se) cycling in the atmosphere, from its emission and chemical transformation to its deposition. Selenium, an essential micronutrient and antioxidant, shares chemical similarities with sulfur, and the project will also compare the environmental pathways of both elements. One PhD project (A) will focus on designing and conducting field sampling campaigns in diverse environments and seasons, collecting wet and dry deposition samples, and performing laboratory analyses using ICP-MS and other chemical methods to determine elemental composition and speciation. The other PhD project (B) will center on atmospheric modeling, extending the global selenium cycling model within the ICON-ART system, and applying statistical inference for hypothesis testing.

The modeling work will involve mapping atmospheric Se inputs and predicting future deposition patterns under changing climate and emission scenarios, with validation using data from Project A. Both PhD students will collaborate closely, publish results in peer-reviewed journals, present at international conferences, and participate in teaching activities. The positions offer training with leading experts, networking opportunities, flexible working hours, and a supportive, diverse research environment.

Applicants should hold a relevant MSc degree, possess strong analytical or computational skills depending on the project, and be fluent in English. Funding is secured for four years, with a competitive PhD salary according to ETH standards. Applicants must hold a MSc degree in a relevant field: for Project A, environmental chemistry, geochemistry, environmental sciences or related; for Project B, atmospheric or climate sciences, environmental or Earth sciences, physics, computational sciences or closely related discipline. Strong interest in chemical analyses (Project A) or numerical and quantitative science (Project B) is required. Experience with ICP-MS or other mass spectrometry techniques is ideal for Project A. Strong programming skills in Fortran, C, R, or Python are required for Project B; prior experience in process-based or climate modeling is an asset. Fluent communication and writing skills in English are mandatory. Candidates should be self-driven, critical thinkers, and collaborative.
