Music and lived experiences in non-elite English homes

Queen Mary University of London, in partnership with the Museum of the Home, is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship under the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership scheme. The project, 'Soundscapes of Domesticity: Music and Lived Experience in Non-Elite English Homes, 1780–1870', investigates the role of music in everyday life across a range of domestic settings, from working-class cottages to petit-bourgeois households and institutional homes. The research will address how music shaped domestic practices, social interactions, and connections to broader cultural and political networks. The successful candidate will produce a thesis based on original research, contribute to museum redisplay projects, and help create musical soundtracks and public events. Supervision is provided by Alastair Owens (Historical Geography), Matthew Ingleby (Victorian Literature), Louis Platman (Curator), and Gaynor Tutani (Creative Programming Officer). The studentship includes full tuition at the UKRI home rate, a tax-free stipend of £22,780/year (plus £600 CDP payment), and up to £1,000/year for travel and related expenses. International students are eligible for the stipend but must pay the fee difference. Applicants should have a strong academic background in a relevant discipline and an interest in interdisciplinary research. The deadline for applications is 23 May 2025, with interviews in early June. For details and to apply, visit the provided link or contact Alastair Owens for informal enquiries.
