Postdoc or Programmer in Real-Life Transportation Optimization
Join the Eindhoven University of Technology as a Postdoc or Programmer in Real-Life Transportation Optimization and contribute to cutting-edge research with real-world impact. The position is embedded within the Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) department, renowned for its interdisciplinary approach and strong industry collaborations. You will work on three major initiatives: Next-Level Logistics, Conversion Factory, and AI4ROAD, all focused on translating fundamental scientific knowledge into practical decision-support tools for logistics and transportation companies.
In the Next-Level Logistics project, you will help develop collaborative decision-support tools to optimize cross-docking operations for freight transport, working closely with over ten transportation companies. These tools leverage advanced algorithms, including metaheuristic search, integer programming, reinforcement learning, and stochastic optimization, to address challenges such as optimal location selection, vehicle routing, and service promise evaluation. The Conversion Factory project aims to showcase transportation optimization algorithms through online platforms, while AI4ROAD involves direct collaboration with industry partners to develop tooling for full-truckload transport planning.
Your responsibilities will include upscaling research prototypes into robust systems for industry pilots, collaborating with cross-docks, carriers, and 3PLs, translating academic algorithms into reliable software, and co-organizing stakeholder workshops. You will also have opportunities to publish in top scientific journals and contribute to grant proposals. The role offers flexibility to engage with multiple projects and encourages both PhD holders and experienced programmers from industry to apply.
Applicants should have a PhD or MSc in a relevant field (Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, Logistics, Econometrics, Applied Mathematics), strong programming skills in C++/C, Python, SQL, and experience developing logistics solutions. Proficiency in Dutch is highly preferred, and excellent English communication skills are required. The position offers a full-time contract for one year, competitive salary (scale 10: €4,241–€5,538), year-end bonus, vacation pay, allowances for commuting and internet costs, and support for international candidates including immigration assistance and moving expenses.
To apply, submit your application online with a cover letter, CV, publications, references, and best publications (if relevant). The vacancy remains open until filled, with a deadline of April 5, 2026.
