Enhancing Judo Performance – Designing and Delivering Effective Training

A fully funded 4-year PhD studentship is available at the University of Wolverhampton in partnership with the British Judo Association and GB Judo. The project focuses on enhancing elite judo performance through strength and conditioning, investigating how physical preparation translates into technical and tactical success in competition. The successful candidate will deliver S&C support to elite judo athletes, work within an interdisciplinary team, and develop applied academic expertise through a project focused on gym-to-mat performance transfer. The research aims to identify key physical qualities behind winning judo actions, co-design training interventions with coaches and athletes, and develop practical tools to track readiness and adaptation. The studentship offers a £20,780 annual stipend and a full tuition fee waiver.
