Fully-funded Joint PhD Positions in Computational Fluid Dynamics, Biomedical Systems, and Clean Energy at University of Queensland and IIT Delhi
Three fully-funded joint PhD positions are available at The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD), India, through the UQ–IITD Research Academy. These positions offer a unique opportunity to work across two world-class institutions, engaging in cutting-edge research at the intersection of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), biomedical engineering, and clean energy technologies.
The research projects span high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics, including the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and its coupling with the discrete element method (LBM–DEM), non-Newtonian and bio-fluid dynamics, fluid–particle and fluid–structure interactions, and reactive transport phenomena. Key application areas include complex flow physics in biomedical systems—such as vascular gas embolisms, hemodynamic alterations, and cell/particle migration and segregation in blood and microfluidic flows—as well as clean-energy technologies, particularly electrochemical flow batteries involving coupled fluid flow, electrochemical reactions, and multiphase transport. The projects emphasize physics-based modelling, high-performance computing, and predictive simulation tools for healthcare, biotechnology, and sustainable energy storage applications.
Supervision will be provided by a collaborative team of academics: Associate Professor Christopher Leonardi and Dr. Travis Mitchell from UQ, and Associate Professor Bahni Ray from IITD. Students will benefit from joint supervision, access to advanced research facilities, and the opportunity to work in both Australia and India.
Eligibility requirements include a strong academic background in engineering, physics, or related fields, proficiency in computational methods, and a relevant undergraduate or master's degree. International and domestic students are eligible. Please consult the official UQ–IITD Research Academy website for detailed eligibility criteria and application instructions.
Funding is fully provided, covering tuition fees and a stipend for living expenses. The program is open to Australian, Indian, and international students. The application process requires submission of an online Expression of Interest (EOI) by 7 January 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews, and successful applicants will commence their PhD in July 2026.
