WGSSS PhD positions

Swansea University is offering fully funded PhD studentships in Politics, International Relations, and Area Studies through the ESRC Welsh Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS). The program is based in the Department of Politics, Philosophy, and International Relations and welcomes research proposals in international relations, area studies, international development, comparative politics, political communication (especially digital politics), and political and social philosophy. The department is known for its intellectual pluralism, diverse research methods, and global reach, with research groups focusing on drug policy, political analysis, philosophy, and international security. The studentship covers tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend of £20,780 per year, along with a Research Training Support Grant and potential Disabled Students’ Allowance. Applicants must have at least a first or upper second-class honours degree or a master's, meet English language requirements, and submit a comprehensive application including references and an EDI form. The deadline for applications is 11 December 2025, and the program welcomes both full-time and part-time applicants, including those from non-traditional backgrounds. All funded students will complete a three-month research placement. For more information, applicants can contact Dr Kris Stoddart or the postgraduate scholarships team at Swansea University.
