PhD Positions in Phage Biology and Bacterial Genetics at University of Calgary

Two fully funded PhD positions are available in the lab of Professor Dongyan Xu Niu at the University of Calgary, Canada, focusing on phage biology and bacterial genetics. The research targets the molecular arms race between lytic bacteriophages and multidrug-resistant E. coli ST131, with two distinct projects: one on phage structural biology (characterizing novel phage tail-spike proteins using X-ray crystallography, Cryo-EM, and protein biochemistry) and another on host resistance mechanisms (validating host genes mediating phage resistance using CRISPR/Cas9 and genomics tools). Candidates should have an MSc in Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, or Genomics, with relevant research experience and a strong publication record. Experience with protein purification, bacterial cloning, or bioinformatics is advantageous. The positions are fully funded, with the opportunity to apply for the Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards (CIRTA), offering $40,000 CAD/year for 3 years to outstanding international researchers. Applicants must be international or Canadian citizens/permanent residents currently residing abroad and not currently affiliated with a Canadian institution. To apply, email [email protected] with the required documents. The application deadline is January 8, 2026. This is an excellent opportunity to gain expertise in cutting-edge techniques and contribute to high-impact research addressing the global antimicrobial resistance crisis.
