Fully Funded PhD Positions in Mobile Sensing, Geodesy, and 3D Data Analysis at University of Bonn

The University of Bonn's Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation is inviting applications for several fully funded PhD positions in the research groups Mobile Sensing and Geodesy. These groups focus on the generation, analysis, and interpretation of 3D data using advanced mobile and static sensor systems for applications such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, and the mapping of natural and built environments. The research areas include terrestrial laser scanning, point cloud processing and analysis, 3D surface and object modelling, accurate localization and navigation of mobile sensing systems, and the application and evaluation of these systems. Successful candidates will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment, working closely with the groups led by Senior Research Scientist Lasse Klingbeil and Professor Heiner Kuhlmann. The Mobile Sensing group specializes in developing high-precision measurement platforms using UAVs, robots, and vehicles, integrating cameras, laser scanners, spectral sensors, GNSS, and inertial sensors. The Geodesy group advances engineering geodesy, focusing on sensor and algorithm improvement for terrestrial laser scanning and mobile mapping systems, with applications in agricultural sciences and environmental monitoring. Applicants must have an MSc degree in geodesy, computer science, robotics, physics, engineering, or a related field, with top academic performance. A demonstrated background in at least one of the research topics is required, along with strong English language skills. The positions are fully funded (TV-L E13), offering competitive salary and benefits. The University of Bonn is recognized as one of Germany's Excellence Universities, providing an outstanding research environment and opportunities for collaboration with external partners. To apply, candidates should submit a single PDF containing their CV, motivation letter, transcripts, list of relevant courses and grades, links to thesis or publications, academic profiles, and contact details for two referees via the application portal by 20 February 2026. For more information, visit the Mobile Sensing and Geodesy group pages or contact the supervisors directly.
