Assistant Professor (Post-doc) in Paleoseismology and Cave Deformation Analysis
The University of Silesia in Katowice invites applications for a postdoctoral Assistant Professor position in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Institute of Earth Sciences, as part of the NCN SONATA BIS project "Enhancing paleoseismological record through multi-methods cave deformation analysis tested in diverse Hellenides tectonic regimes." The project is led by Jacek Szczygieł, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor, and focuses on advancing paleoseismological research using innovative multi-method approaches, including finite element modeling and field studies in Greek caves.
The successful candidate will conduct research in earth and environmental sciences, participate in fieldwork in selected caves in Greece, and contribute to laboratory analyses at the Institute of Earth Sciences. Responsibilities include coordinating and acquiring data for finite element method (FEM) analysis, MES modeling of cave dripstones, and contributing to scientific publications. The position also involves organizational duties as assigned.
Applicants must have a PhD in natural sciences or a related field (earth sciences, geology, geophysics, or engineering), awarded no more than 7 years before the employment date. Strong English skills and documented experience in FEM modeling or seismological/paleoseismological research are required, along with a publication record indexed in Scopus or Web of Science. Additional assets include experience with LIDAR point cloud data and mountaineering or speleological skills. The PhD must be from an institution other than the University of Silesia in Katowice, or the candidate must have completed at least 10 months of postdoctoral internship abroad. The project manager must not have supervised the candidate's PhD, and during employment, the candidate cannot receive remuneration from other NCN projects or other employers, including those outside Poland.
The position offers full-time employment for one year, with the possibility of extension, and a maximum base remuneration (including seniority bonus) of 8986 PLN per month.
