PhD: Longitudinal Study of Changes to the Ocular Surface and Tear Film (Part-Time, Practice-Based)

This part-time, practice-based PhD at Aston University investigates longitudinal changes in the ocular surface and tear film, with a particular focus on dry eye disease in both adults and children. The project is designed for candidates in routine eyecare practice and can be completed over up to six years, with much of the research conducted remotely. The study aims to address gaps in the literature regarding untreated and treated patients, as well as the impact of treatment compliance, using tools such as the MyDryEye app and objective clinical metrics. Key project activities include reviewing previous longitudinal studies, establishing a cohort for regular (6-monthly) clinical assessments, and examining yearly variations in symptoms and compliance. The research is situated within the College of Health and Life Sciences at Aston University, Birmingham, UK. Candidates must be able to visit campus regularly and be located within a reasonable distance. Financial support includes a full waiver of Home tuition fees. Overseas applicants are welcome but must cover the difference between Home and Overseas tuition fees (currently £17,712 for 2026/7). No stipend or consumables are provided; the candidate's practice must supply standard clinical materials and ideally have equipment for objective tear film measurement. Applicants should hold, or expect to achieve, a First or Upper Second Class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, or a Merit or above in a relevant postgraduate Masters plus an undergraduate degree. English language proficiency is required. The application process requires submission of transcripts, certificates, a research statement, personal statement, CV, two academic references, and a copy of the passport. Interviews will be conducted online for shortlisted candidates. Applications are accepted year-round.
