PhD Position in Cybersecurity for 6G and Satellite Communications

Luleå University of Technology, a leading institution in Sweden, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Cybersecurity within its Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering. The university is renowned for its innovative research and strong industry collaborations, particularly in the Arctic region. This position is part of a new multidisciplinary competence center launching in 2025, in partnership with KTH and RISE, focused on 'Sustainable Mobile Autonomous and Resilient 6G SatCom.' The research aims to integrate land-based mobile and space-based satellite communications for future 6G networks, expected to be operational in the 2030s. The successful candidate will develop secure solutions for 6G and satellite communications, including quantum-safe, efficient, and automated Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for 6G-NTN, independent authentication services, and new secure communication protocols. The work will also involve path-aware networking to ensure traffic avoids insecure nodes and links, and secure handover between terrestrial and satellite systems. The position is funded by the European Regional Development Fund's Upper Norrland program and offers a four-year contract, with possible teaching duties up to 20%. Applicants must have a master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, strong software development skills, and fluency in English. Experience in mathematics, computer security, encryption, research, and publication is advantageous but not required. The university encourages female applicants to apply, as the cybersecurity group is currently male-dominated. The position is based in Skellefteå, Sweden, with a flexible start date from January 2026. Security clearance may be required. To apply, candidates should submit a CV, personal letter, and verified diplomas in English or Swedish via the online application portal, referencing number 4677-2025.
