PhD in Chemistry and Materials Science of Dual Wavelength Tomographic 3D Printing

This fully funded PhD position at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) offers an exciting opportunity to advance the chemistry and materials science of 3D printing, with a focus on dual wavelength tomographic methods. The project, part of the ToMaTo (Towards Multiscale Free-Form Manufacturing Employing Tomographic Polyspectral Reconstruction) initiative, aims to push the boundaries of print fidelity and property modulation in 3D-printed objects by leveraging advanced photochemistry and innovative printing techniques. The research centers on investigating the chemistry of the 3D printing process, particularly the roles of photoinitiators and photoinhibitors. You will characterize existing molecules, synthesize new candidates, and optimize combinations for improved print resolution and spatial property variation. The dual wavelength approach enables either independent polymerization of two different polymers or the use of a photo-inhibitor to enhance print fidelity, offering significant advancements in additive manufacturing. Main tasks include: Familiarizing yourself with tomographic 3D-printing processes Characterizing photo-initiators and photo-inhibitors with respect to their spectral properties Optimizing initiator/inhibitor pairs for the printing process Suggesting and synthesizing new photochemical compounds Engaging in teaching and co-supervision of BSc and MSc students The ideal candidate will have a strong background in organic photochemistry, polymer chemistry, and an interest in additive manufacturing, especially tomographic 3D printing. A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent is required. You may apply before completing your degree but must have it before starting the position. Proficiency in English and a demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research are essential. The position is embedded in the Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Section at DTU Chemistry, a leading research environment with a strong track record in photoinitiated additive manufacturing. The group, led by Professor Kristoffer Almdal, is known for its cross-disciplinary collaborations and innovative research in polymer synthesis and characterization. DTU is internationally recognized for research excellence and offers a dynamic, inclusive, and supportive environment. The PhD appointment is for three years, with salary and terms based on the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations' agreement. The start date is as soon as possible after selection. For more information about DTU Chemistry, visit DTU Chemistry and see recent highlights in the annual report . International applicants are welcome and can access relocation support and seminars. Application deadline: 1 January 2026. Apply online via the official portal, submitting all required documents in a single PDF file. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of background.
