Cardiovascular disease and ethnic differences in growth and fat deposition

The British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence at University College London is offering a three-year, full-time PhD studentship focused on investigating ethnic differences in cardiometabolic health risks. The programme is interdisciplinary, welcoming applicants with backgrounds in medical science, biology, epidemiology, data science, engineering, mathematics, physics, medical imaging, genomics, and social sciences. Students will be based at UCL and have opportunities to collaborate with the Healthy Urban Places project and the SpaceSyntax Lab. The research themes include therapeutic innovation in rare and inherited cardiovascular diseases, engineered solutions for structural and congenital heart disease, and ethnicity and cardiometabolic health. Applicants must hold at least an upper second-class UK Bachelor's degree or equivalent, or a recognised taught Master degree, and demonstrate good English proficiency. The studentship is fully funded for UK students, covering stipend, tuition, consumables, and travel. International students must cover the difference between UK and overseas tuition fees. The application deadline is November 16, 2025, with interviews held online in December and the programme starting in October 2026. Interested candidates should complete the online application and are encouraged to contact the CRE management or theme leads for discussion before applying. The programme offers access to world-class research facilities, interdisciplinary training, and opportunities for networking and career development in cardiovascular science.
