Research Explorer Ruhr 2026: Postdoc Preparation Fellowship in Multidisciplinary Research

The Research Explorer Ruhr 2026 program is a unique opportunity for international doctoral researchers who have submitted their thesis and early postdoctoral researchers who have recently completed their PhD to explore postdoc possibilities in the Ruhr Area of Germany. Hosted by the University Alliance Ruhr, which includes Ruhr University Bochum, University of Duisburg-Essen, and TU Dortmund University, the program offers a two-week funded stay from 21 June to 4 July 2026. Participants will be matched with one of over 40 professors across a wide range of disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, mathematics, medical science, environmental science, materials science, economics, psychology, sociology, political science, neuroscience, education, robotics, and business. During the fellowship, participants will work out cooperation opportunities, assess research compatibility, and explore the possibility of returning as a postdoc with their own funding. The program includes workshops on German postdoc funding schemes, research career options, and proposal writing, as well as networking events and excursions to help fellows discover the Ruhr region as a vibrant place to work and live. The program is designed to support early career researchers in acquiring grants from major donors such as Alexander-von-Humboldt, DAAD, and the European Commission. Eligibility is open to international doctoral researchers who have submitted their thesis and early postdoctoral researchers who have recently finished their PhD. There are no specific field restrictions, making this a multidisciplinary opportunity. The program covers travel, visa, and accommodation costs for the two-week stay, but does not provide a salary or stipend. Interested candidates should browse host profiles on the Research Academy Ruhr website, prepare their application documents, and follow UA Ruhr Research Academy for updates. The application call opens in January 2026, with the deadline set for 31 January 2026. This is an excellent chance to network, gain insights into the German research landscape, and prepare for a future postdoc in Germany. For more information and to meet potential hosts, visit the Research Academy Ruhr website.
