PhD Positions in Equilibrium Learning, Uncertainty, and Dynamics at Technical University of Munich

The Chair of Decision Sciences and Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), under the leadership of Professor Martin Bichler, is recruiting Doctoral Researchers for the ERC Advanced Grant project titled “Equilibrium Learning, Uncertainty, and Dynamics.” This newly established research team will focus on cutting-edge topics in machine learning, agentic AI, online learning, optimization, and their applications in economics. The positions are full-time (100%) and initially offered for two years, with the possibility of extension based on performance and project requirements. Successful candidates will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary, and international research community at the TUM Garching campus, within the Department of Computer Science and the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology (CIT). Responsibilities include collaborative research within the team and with external partners, contributing to teaching activities, and active engagement in the academic life of the group. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Mathematics, and demonstrate an excellent academic record, strong motivation, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Solid English communication skills are required, while proficiency in German is not necessary. Employment conditions include a salary based on the German public sector pay scale TV-L E13, commensurate with experience and qualifications, and funding for travel and participation in international conferences and workshops. The start date is flexible, beginning from January 2026 onward. The research focuses on automated market interactions, learning agents, and the design of new algorithms for computing equilibria in game-theoretic settings. The positions are full-time, initially for two years, with the possibility of extension. Doctoral candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science or Mathematics, while postdoctoral applicants require a Ph.D. in these fields, ideally with expertise in Optimization, Game Theory, or Machine Learning. Applicants should have an excellent academic record, strong motivation, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. English proficiency is required; German is not necessary.
