PhD in Leadership Studies: Creative Education, Youth Empowerment, and Upskilling in Africa's Informal Creative Economy
African Creativity Beyond Borders, in partnership with King's College London and the Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education, announces a fully funded 4-year PhD opportunity in Leadership Studies with reference to Security & Development. This programme is designed for candidates interested in creative education, youth empowerment, and upskilling within Africa's informal creative economy, particularly in West Africa.
The research project will explore educational pathways for young creatives (under 35) working informally in Africa's creative and cultural industries, such as music, film, fashion, visual arts, design, and digital media. The focus is on how these young workers can be supported through digital and transnational education platforms, addressing barriers to professionalisation, access to skills, and the role of policy and institutions in creative enterprise.
Supervision is provided by Dr Michael Flavin (Reader in Global Education, King's College London), Dr Tamsyn Dent (Department of Culture, Media and Creative Industries, King's College London), and Dr Kingsley Ugwuanyi (Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education). The doctoral candidate will benefit from mentorship, cohort activities, and access to research resources and networking opportunities across the ABC.
The project aims to bridge knowledge across the arts, humanities, social sciences, and public policy, contributing to best practices in creative education and digital learning. Outcomes include developing an understanding of the educational needs and aspirations of young informal workers, contributing to global knowledge of the African creative economy, and fostering access to shared memory in diasporic communities.
Applicants should have a strong academic background in relevant fields and an interest in creative education, youth empowerment, and digital platforms. The position is fully funded, covering tuition and a UKRI-rate stipend, with additional training and partnership benefits. The application deadline is 13 February 2026.
