Postdoctoral Positions in Community-led Conservation and Governance at University of Miami and Stanford University

The University of Miami and Stanford University are jointly recruiting two outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associates to join an international research team focused on community-led conservation and governance. The positions emphasize the role of philanthropic foundations and grant-making practices in conservation efforts, with one postdoc based at the University of Miami (working with Dr. Rebecca Gruby) and the other at Stanford University (working with Dr. Xavier Basurto). The research will involve extensive fieldwork in Indonesia and Mexico, respectively, and deep collaboration with local communities, conservation practitioners, and philanthropic organizations. Applicants should have expertise in conservation governance, community-led conservation, and participatory and qualitative research methods. Disciplinary backgrounds may include environmental governance, political science, political ecology, sustainability science, human geography, cultural anthropology, or related fields. Interdisciplinary scholars are encouraged to apply. The research team is led by Dr. Rebecca Gruby (University of Miami), Dr. Xavier Basurto (Stanford University), and Dr. Michele Betsill (University of Copenhagen). The University of Miami postdoc will be housed in the Robert K. Johnson Center for Marine Conservation within the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science, leading case studies in Indonesia. The Stanford postdoc will be based in the Environmental Social Sciences department within the Doerr School of Sustainability, leading case studies in Mexico. Both positions are full-time, initially for one year with the possibility of renewal for an additional 1.5 years based on performance and funding availability. Key research areas include community-led conservation, conservation governance, environmental governance, participatory and qualitative research, philanthropic foundations, and grant-making. The project aims to produce actionable results to inform grant-making, policy, and practice in community-led conservation globally. For more information and to apply, visit the provided University of Miami and Stanford University application links. Candidates should apply for the position that best matches their background; there is no need to apply to both as applications will be reviewed together.
