PhD or Postdoc Position in Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Masonry Structures

This position at ETH Zürich, within the Chair of Concrete Structures and Bridge Design led by Prof. Dr. Walter Kaufmann, offers an opportunity for doctoral or postdoctoral researchers to contribute to cutting-edge research in the numerical and experimental investigation of masonry structures. The group specializes in the mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete and masonry, aiming to optimize the load-bearing capacity of existing structures and efficiently design new ones. Research activities combine large-scale experimental testing in state-of-the-art facilities, development of mechanical material models, and implementation of these models in nonlinear finite element simulations. The position involves conducting large-scale experiments on masonry components and hybrid systems with reinforced concrete, developing and validating mechanical material models, and analyzing hybrid structural systems under seismic loads using advanced computational methods. The role also includes supporting teaching activities in structural masonry and contributing to scientific publications and reports. Applicants should have a Master’s or doctoral degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline, with a strong interest in mechanical and numerical modeling, experimental research, and programming. The working environment is modern and collaborative, with access to excellent research infrastructure and opportunities for professional development. ETH Zürich values diversity, inclusion, and sustainability, fostering a fair and open academic culture. Applications must be submitted online, including a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates, and optionally references and publication list. For further information, Dr. Marius Weber is available for inquiries (not for application submission).
