PhD Position in Valorization of Secondary Raw Materials for Sustainable Construction Materials at DTU Sustain

Are you passionate about sustainable construction and the valorization of secondary raw materials? The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Sustain invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on the safe and sustainable use of incineration ashes as secondary raw materials in binder-based construction materials. This interdisciplinary project is based in the Section of Construction Materials and Durability at DTU Sustain, one of Europe's largest university departments specializing in environmental and resource engineering. The research will investigate how inorganic contaminants (metals and salts) from incineration ashes interact within binder matrices such as alkali-activated and cement-based materials. The project aims to determine the fixation potential of these contaminants, their interaction with hydration phases, and their mobility by studying phase assemblages, pore solution chemistry, and leaching properties. The work will combine advanced laboratory experiments with modelling approaches to address key research questions in circular construction and material sustainability. As a PhD student, you will conduct independent research, perform literature reviews, design and execute experiments, and use modelling to interpret results. You will disseminate your findings through publications in international peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences. The position also includes opportunities for teaching and supervising BSc and MSc students. You will join a vibrant research environment with access to world-class facilities and experienced, internationally recognized staff, fostering strong collaboration and exchange. Eligibility: Applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in civil engineering, material science, chemistry, or related fields. Experience or strong interest in cement chemistry, alkali-activated materials, thermodynamic modelling, and analytical techniques such as quantitative XRD is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently, plan and carry out complex laboratory tasks, and have a motivation for interdisciplinary, sustainability-focused research. Funding: The position is fully funded for 3 years, with salary and appointment terms based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The exact allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. Application Process: Applications must be submitted online by 14 December 2025. Please prepare a single PDF file containing your cover letter, CV, grade transcripts, and diplomas (in English), and complete the online application form via the provided link. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. For further information, visit the DTU Sustain website or contact the supervisors. DTU Sustain is committed to developing environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies and disseminating this knowledge to society and future generations of engineers. The department has approximately 300 staff from over 30 nationalities and offers an inclusive, international working environment. DTU is globally recognized for research excellence and innovation, with campuses across Denmark and Greenland and collaborations with leading universities worldwide.
