PhD and Postdoc Positions in Embedded & Edge Intelligence, Applied AI, and Secure Computing at Purdue University
The Networked and Embedded Intelligent Systems (NEIS) Lab at Purdue University, led by Professor Younghyun Kim, is recruiting multiple fully funded PhD students and up to two postdoctoral researchers for Fall 2026. The lab is part of the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and focuses on cutting-edge research in Embedded & Edge Intelligence, Applied AI, Energy-Efficient Computing, Secure Computing, and IoT/Cyber-Physical Systems. Research topics include system-on-chip design, privacy-preserving machine learning, wearable and wireless sensing, and real-world system prototyping.
PhD candidates will join a hands-on research environment, working on projects at the intersection of hardware and software. Applicants should have experience in areas such as RTL design, PCB design, computer architecture, machine learning programming, firmware and embedded development, and mobile computing. Proficiency in Python, C, C++, Verilog/SystemVerilog, and MATLAB is preferred. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential, as projects are team-based and may involve external partners. The lab welcomes motivated students from diverse backgrounds who are eager to learn, prototype, iterate, and publish.
PhD positions are fully funded, including tuition coverage and a stipend. Postdoctoral positions offer competitive packages, with opportunities to apply for external fellowships such as the Lillian Gilbreth, Commercialization, and Sejong Fellowships. The application process for PhD candidates involves applying to the Purdue ECE PhD program, selecting 'VLSI and Circuit Design' or 'Computer Engineering' as the research area, and listing Prof. Kim as a potential advisor. The strict deadline for full consideration is December 1, 2025. After submitting the graduate application, candidates are encouraged to complete the NEIS Lab Prospective Student Form to highlight their interest.
Postdoctoral applicants should email Prof. Kim with a CV, research statement, and references. Applications are reviewed monthly until the positions are filled. The lab also occasionally offers undergraduate research opportunities for juniors and seniors who have completed advanced coursework.
