About this position

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder at the interface of neurology and hematology, focusing on translational ischemic stroke research. This position is based within the Department of Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences, and is embedded in the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Histology (CBH). The research aims to elucidate the mechanisms by which immunothrombosis—interactions between thrombosis and the immune system—drives brain injury and disease progression following stroke. Innovative humanized mouse models and patient samples will be used to advance understanding in this area.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary research environment, collaborating closely with the Antwerp Centre for Advanced Microscopy (ACAM), which offers state-of-the-art imaging infrastructure for cellular studies. Responsibilities include preparing a PhD thesis, publishing scientific articles, presenting research at national and international conferences, and supporting teaching and research activities within CBH.

Applicants must hold (or be about to obtain) a Master degree in Biomedical sciences, Bio-engineering, Pharmaceutical sciences, Biochemistry, Veterinary sciences, or an equivalent field. Excellent academic results, strong analytical and planning skills, and a FELASA B/C attest for animal research are required. Candidates should be willing to work with animal models, demonstrate flexibility in working hours, and be prepared to apply for external PhD fellowships (e.g. FWO).

The scholarship is initially offered for one year, with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of four years, subject to positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined by university rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and commuting support (bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs). Doctoral researchers have access to a wide range of courses and educational credits through the Antwerp Doctoral School. The main workplace is Campus Drie Eiken, Wilrijk, Belgium.

Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by 13 April 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV, and a 200-word summary of the Master Thesis. The selection committee will review applications promptly after the deadline, and interviews (online or on campus) will be held in April/May 2026. For questions regarding the application process, contact [email protected]; for job-specific inquiries, contact Prof. Dr. Frederik Denorme at [email protected].

The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The institution holds the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and offers a supportive, family-friendly work environment.
