About this position

This PhD scholarship, offered by the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Offshore Wind Energy Sustainability and Resilience, provides an exciting opportunity to advance research in oceanographic modelling. The CDT is a partnership between the Universities of Durham, Hull, Loughborough, and Sheffield, and the position is based at Loughborough University within the Offshore Wind CDT.

The project focuses on parameterising wakes for oceanographic models, a critical area for understanding the environmental impacts and operational efficiency of offshore wind energy systems. Research areas include energy technologies, environmental engineering, fluid mechanics, marine engineering, offshore engineering, hydrology, marine sciences, applied mathematics, mathematical modelling, and statistics. The successful candidate will work closely with a supervisory team comprising Dr C Lloyd, Prof R Dorrell, Dr M Bastankhah, and Dr M De Dominicis, all experts in their respective fields.

Funding is provided through the EPSRC CDT scholarship, covering tuition fees and a stipend for eligible students. Applicants should possess a strong academic background in engineering, mathematics, physics, environmental science, or a related discipline, with excellent analytical and mathematical skills. Experience in fluid mechanics, marine engineering, or environmental modelling is highly desirable. English language requirements must be met as per university policy.

Applications are accepted year round. To apply, visit the project link, prepare your CV, academic transcripts, and a cover letter outlining your suitability for the position. For further information, contact the CDT or supervisors directly. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in contributing to sustainable offshore wind energy and advancing oceanographic modelling techniques.
