About this position
Charles Darwin University (CDU), in partnership with CSIRO and the Research Institute for Northern Agriculture, is offering a PhD opportunity in cotton pest research focused on population genomics, molecular ecology, bioinformatics, genetics, and Bt resistance in the emerging cotton pest Spodoptera litura in Northern Australia.
The project addresses important knowledge gaps in pest movement, population structure, dispersal, gene flow, and resistance development across northern cotton landscapes. It is designed to support Australia’s Resistance Management Plan and improve sustainable pest management for the cotton industry.
Successful candidates will work closely with CDU, CSIRO, CRDC, and industry partners, with training in population genomics, data analysis, and modelling. The project is based in Darwin or Canberra, with fieldwork in the Northern Territory.
Funding: The scholarship provides a $41,190 per annum tax-free stipend (including a $7,000 top-up), a generous research budget, and support for project costs. The duration is 3 to 3.5 years.
Eligibility: Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens/permanent residents, have First-Class Honours or equivalent in molecular biology, ecology, genetics, bioinformatics, or a related field, and be available to commence in 2026. Experience in molecular/genomics or bioinformatics, publication record, and fieldwork experience are desirable.
Deadline: Applications close on 1 May 2026.
How to apply: Send an expression of interest by email to Professor Maxine Piggott with a CV, details of two academic referees, and a brief statement of your background, research experience, and interest in the project.
