About this position

This PhD scholarship at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of resilient composite columns for vehicular impact protection. The project aims to mitigate the effects of vehicular collisions on roadside bridges and buildings by designing innovative, high-performance protective columns. The proposed system features a composite column with an outer Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) tube, an inner steel tube, and a sustainable concrete infill incorporating recycled waste tyres.

The research scope includes optimization of geometric and material properties, structural testing under static and impact loadings, and microstructural damage assessment of impact-tested tubes. The project addresses critical gaps in current design practices by developing theoretical models and robust design guidelines for columns subjected to vehicular impact. Candidates with a strong background in FRP and composite structures, as well as experience in machine learning and finite element modelling, are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic research environment within the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering and the QUT Centre for Materials Science. Supervision will be provided by Associate Prof. Hafizah Binti Ramli, Dr. Sabrina Fawzia, and Professor Tommy Chan, all leading experts in the field.

Funding includes a stipend of $37,010 per annum (tax exempt, indexed annually) for up to 3.5 years, with a possible 6-month extension. Tuition fees are fully offset for up to 4 years, providing a comprehensive financial package for doctoral study.

Eligibility requirements include meeting QUT's PhD entry standards, including English language proficiency, enrolling as a full-time internal student, and commencing by 1 August 2026. Applicants should have a first class bachelor honours degree or a master's in civil/structural engineering with a research component exceeding 25%. Preference will be given to candidates with a first-author journal publication (Q1 journal preferred) and experience in finite element modelling and machine learning.

To apply, email Assoc. Prof. Hafizah Binti Ramli with your academic and research background, motivation, and CV. If supported, submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for QUT's PhD program, nominating her as principal supervisor and referencing the scholarship link. Applications close on 20 April 2026.
