Description

The University of Twente is offering two fully funded 4-year PhD positions in the Data Management and Biometrics (DMB) group, led by Dr. Nicola Strisciuglio, as part of the NWO-VIDI project "ReVision: Robust and Data-Efficient Vision Foundation Models." The research focuses on advancing computer vision and machine learning by developing new techniques for compositional learning and data efficiency in vision foundation models. The project aims to address the challenges of high data requirements, hidden biases, and limited accessibility in current vision models by exploring structured concept learning, bias detection, machine unlearning, and self-supervised objectives with perceptual and conceptual priors. PhD candidates will work on one of two topics: (1) Compositional Learning, focusing on object-attribute compositionality to reduce exhaustive data needs, and (2) Self-Supervised Learning with priors, designing objectives that capture continuous similarity. Both positions will contribute to integrating machine unlearning techniques to remove biases and shortcuts during model training. The research environment is interdisciplinary and internationally oriented, with strong collaboration within the EEMCS faculty and external partners. Applicants should have or be close to completing a master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mathematics (with a major in AI, ML, or Computer Vision). Required qualifications include a solid background in machine learning and computer vision, strong mathematical and programming skills, creativity, analytical ability, teamwork, and proficiency in English. Non-native speakers must provide an IELTS (min 6.5), TOEFL-iBT (min 90), or Cambridge CAE-C (CPE) certificate unless their prior education was in English. Experience in scientific publishing at top venues is appreciated. The positions are fully funded for four years, with a gross monthly salary from €3,059 to €3,881, plus benefits such as an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, pension scheme, generous leave, free campus sports facilities, parental leave, a training program, and a travel budget for conferences. The University of Twente is a family-friendly, internationally recognized institution with a strong focus on high-tech human touch and societal impact. To apply, submit your application online before January 6, 2026, including a CV (max 2 pages), cover letter (max 1 page) specifying your interest and motivation for one or both positions, academic transcript, and proof of English proficiency if required. For substantive questions, contact Dr. Nicola Strisciuglio at [email protected]. The first round of interviews will be held in early February 2026. Funding

These are fully funded 4-year PhD positions with a gross monthly salary ranging from €3,059 (first year) to €3,881 (fourth year), in accordance with the Dutch universities' collective labour agreement (CAO-NU). Benefits include an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, solid pension scheme, a minimum of 232 leave hours (plus 96 extra for 40-hour weeks), free campus sports facilities, parental leave, a training program, and a travel budget for conferences.
