About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton explores the experimental investigation of air lubrication for drag reduction over non-flat surfaces, specifically focusing on ship hull geometries. Injecting air beneath a ship’s hull can significantly reduce drag and fuel consumption, but current systems are optimized for flat surfaces. The research aims to address how hull curvature affects air-layer dynamics and stability, a key step toward extending air lubrication technology to a broader range of vessel designs and realistic maritime conditions.

As a doctoral researcher, you will characterize air layer formation, stability, and flow reattachment/detachment dynamics on curved model surfaces under controlled flow conditions. The project involves quantifying the influence of surface curvature on air layer behavior using advanced experimental techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), high-speed imaging, and laser-based diagnostics. You will also investigate air distribution and layer breakdown under varying flow speeds and pressures, simulating realistic maritime environments.

Research will be conducted in the Experimental Fluids Labs and the Boldrewood Towing Tank at the Boldrewood Innovation Campus, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities. The project is flexible and can be tailored to your interests, allowing you to work alongside a diverse and inclusive team of researchers in experimental fluid mechanics and maritime engineering. You will receive hands-on training in advanced diagnostics and modern data analysis, equipping you with valuable skills for both academic and industry careers. Entry requirements include a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, or maritime engineering, with demonstrated project work in fluid mechanics.
