About this position

The Experimental Otolaryngology research group at KU Leuven's Department of Neuroscience is offering a PhD position focused on auditory neural processing in children with listening difficulties. The group, comprising around 50 researchers from diverse disciplines, is based on the Gasthuisberg campus and collaborates closely with the Multidisciplinary Center for Speech Therapy and Audiology (MUCLA) at University Hospitals Leuven. The CLINIC project aims to uncover the causes of listening and processing difficulties in children, particularly those who struggle in noisy environments despite normal hearing.

Current research involves large-scale behavioral profiling of children both in the general population and in specialized centers for developmental disabilities. These behavioral measurements provide valuable insights into how children listen, respond, and process auditory information. To further deepen understanding, neurophysiological measurements such as EEG are employed, offering objective data on the integrity and functioning of the auditory system. By integrating behavioral and neurophysiological data, the project seeks to improve care pathways, enabling more accurate support and tailored interventions for affected children.

The research group maintains close collaborations with the Center for Developmental Disorders in Brussels, the University Psychiatric Center at University Hospitals Leuven, and MUCLA. The project is clinically and socially relevant, providing opportunities for scientific development within a dynamic team. PhD candidates will have the chance to participate in international conferences and collaborations, develop leadership skills, and become world-class researchers.

Applicants must have a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiological Sciences or a related field, with distinction. A strong interest in scientific research, especially neurophysiological research (EEG), is required. Dutch-speaking ability is essential for communicating with children. Excellent collaboration and communication skills are necessary due to teamwork and contact with external centers. Research activities are primarily conducted in English.

KU Leuven offers a competitive monthly stipend (grant) and strives for an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment. Diversity is embraced as an asset, and equal opportunity is a core value. The university does not tolerate discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ethnic or national background, skin colour, religious or philosophical diversity, neurodivergence, employment disability, health, or socioeconomic status. Accessibility and support are available upon request.

The application deadline is June 9, 2026. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply online via the KU Leuven jobsite and to contact Prof. dr. Astrid van Wieringen or Mr. Sam Denys for further information. Early contact is recommended for those interested in the position.
