About this position

The Aston Institute for Membrane Excellence (AIME) at Aston University offers a unique PhD opportunity focused on the urgent challenge of designing plastics for disappearance. This project, 'Designing Plastics for Disappearance: AI-Driven Discovery of Degradable Polymers,' aims to develop new environmentally degradable polymers from renewable feedstocks, addressing the global environmental crisis caused by persistent plastics. AIME is a pioneering institute combining expertise in membrane biology and novel polymer chemistries, fostering breakthroughs in sustainable materials.

As a PhD researcher, you will work at the interface of chemistry, engineering, and data science, gaining hands-on experience in modern polymer synthesis, materials characterisation, and AI-assisted experimentation. The project leverages automation and artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery of degradable polymers, using robotic tools and programmable workflows to efficiently generate and analyse data. Collaborating with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), you will contribute to the creation of an autonomous discovery platform linking polymer structure to environmental degradability.

AIME is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, actively recruiting and training female scientists and welcoming candidates from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. All PhD projects feature flexible working, comprehensive mentorship, opportunities for international secondments, and diverse scientific and transferrable skills training, preparing graduates for leadership roles in academia or industry.

Applicants should have a First Class or 2.1 Bachelor's degree in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent international qualifications. A Master's degree with Merit or higher is also accepted. Essential skills include practical laboratory experience, analytical and problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and strong communication. Desired skills include polymer synthesis or characterisation techniques, programming or data analysis, interest in automation and AI, familiarity with sustainability principles, and motivation for interdisciplinary research. English language proficiency is required.

This three-year studentship provides comprehensive support, including full tuition fees and a tax-free annual stipend at the standard UKRI rate. The application process requires submission of transcripts, certificates, a research statement, personal statement, two academic references, evidence of English language proficiency, and a copy of your passport. Applications must be complete; incomplete submissions will be rejected. Apply early, as the position may close before the stated deadline if a suitable candidate is found.
