About this position
This part-time PhD opportunity at Aston University focuses on the effective management of dry eye disease in routine clinical practice. The project is designed for practitioners in routine eyecare who wish to undertake research aimed at improving the diagnosis and management of dry eye disease, a condition affecting a significant proportion of both adults and children. The research will review current guidance, audit existing practices in primary eyecare clinics, and trial new approaches to standardise the management of dry eye disease, including the involvement of non-eyecare professionals such as pharmacists and general practitioners.
The project is based at the Aston Campus in Birmingham, UK, but offers flexibility for remote research, with the expectation of regular campus visits. A full waiver of Home tuition fees is provided for successful candidates; however, overseas applicants must pay the difference between Home and Overseas fees, currently set at £17,712 for 2026/7. No stipend or consumables are included, so candidates must ensure their practice can cover standard clinical consumables.
Applicants should hold, or expect to achieve, a First or Upper Second Class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from a UK institution, or a Merit (or above) in a relevant postgraduate Masters degree plus an undergraduate degree. Overseas qualifications will be considered for equivalence. Required application materials include transcripts, certificates, a research statement, personal statement, CV, two academic references, evidence of English language proficiency, and a copy of the applicant's passport. English language requirements must be met, but evidence can be submitted later if necessary.
Applications are accepted year-round, and only complete applications with all supporting documents will be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview via Microsoft Teams. For further details and to apply, visit the project page and select 'Research - Health Sciences' on the application form.
