About this position
The University of British Columbia's Faculty of Forestry is recruiting a graduate student (MSc or PhD) for the Urban Nature Design Research Lab, starting September 2026. This fully funded opportunity focuses on technology-based research in urban nature, technology, and human behaviour, with a particular emphasis on sensors, computer vision, and spatio-temporal data analysis. The successful candidate will lead an independent thesis or dissertation and collaborate with lab members and external partners, including municipalities and community organizations.
Research topics include sensor-based methods to measure movement and behavior in urban spaces, computer vision and human–nature interaction analysis, and spatio-temporal data analysis for behavioral insights. Applicants should have a background in urban planning, geography, computer science, urban forestry, or related fields, and possess strong Python skills, especially in sensing or computer vision projects. Interest in urban nature design and human–environment interaction is essential, along with excellent English and teamwork skills.
Preferred assets for PhD applicants include peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, fieldwork experience, and theoretical grounding in behavioral research or environmental psychology. The funding package covers a monthly living stipend, personal computer, dedicated lab/workspace, and conference travel support for 2 years (MSc) or 4 years (PhD). Students will also receive support for external funding applications.
To apply, candidates should email the supervisor, Dr. Keun Park, with a motivation letter, CV, unofficial transcripts, and work samples. The position is based at the Forest Sciences Centre, UBC, Vancouver, Canada. For more information, visit the lab website or contact the supervisor directly.
