About this position

The University of Strathclyde's Department of Chemical & Process Engineering is offering a fully funded PhD opportunity focused on developing sustainable polymeric encapsulation solutions for pest control. The project, supervised by Dr Sara Tatiana Roldan Velasquez (Chancellor's Fellow) and Dr Karen Johnston (Reader), aims to create eco-friendly methods to protect crops and livestock from pests using biopolymers to encapsulate natural pest attractants and beneficial microorganisms. The research will involve modifying polysaccharides to engineer polymers with targeted degradation properties, encapsulating biological control agents and semiochemicals, and characterising the resulting capsules for stability and effectiveness. The project supports the development of a circular economy by incorporating industrial waste–derived materials. Applicants should have a strong background in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science/Engineering, with experience in polymer chemistry and a motivation for multidisciplinary research. The PhD is fully funded for 3.5 years, covering tuition and a stipend at the UK Home student rate. The successful candidate will also complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Researcher Development (PGCert) to enhance their skills and career prospects. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with a deadline of 1 June 2026 and an expected start date in October 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the official University of Strathclyde opportunity page or contact [email protected].
